(What an awful typo: "piece of mind", I'd be turning in my editor grave if I wasn't now an IT consultant ;-))

It's not the powersaving that is important, rather than the fact that it can be invoked with longkeypress, thus giving user a one-key solution to putting the tablet to sleep and waking it up again.
Agreed - that's why I've got it mapped to short keypress, although there's no reason lock keys & screen couldn't similarly be locked.

Now, when we've got more flexible power management (see recent thread on maemo-developers) and GeoClue, I'll be able to get my tablet to mute all sounds and go dark when I press the key at home, or go offline, go dark and keep alarms enabled when in a hotel.

Theoretically.
