Actually you are very likely to screw something while fiddling around with those dozens of sliders. Anyways, after a reboot everything is reset to defaults unless you make changes persistent with the command from my previous post. There shouldn't be any harm to your hardware unless you turn everything up to 100% and play some hardcore techno for some hours

Still, if you screwed up, saved those changes to disk AND lost your backup, there is the possibility to request the original .state file from other users or restore it from install image.
