vi is a line editor (not to be confused with a text editor) that most would say is a pain in the butt to use. But it has the extreme advantage of being really fast and awesome once you have meorized all of the commands.

Personally I prefer nano, then emacs, then vi (or better is vim, which is VI improved..)
