Sounds like the SIM could be at fault, is it an old SIM?

If you are loosing signal when rotatine the phone, it could be contamination of the metal contacts on the SIM, clean them with a pencil eraser and try again.

Try someone elses SIM or ask your operator for a replacement SIM.
