That's propably because the N800 stock kernel uses only 24MHz clock speed. With the SDHC kernel (or MMC kernel something for the latest firmware...) N800 can use 48MHz clock speed. This would make it about twice as fast. The higher speed SDHC cards should support 50MHz clock speed, and I believe most card readers do.
