Trying to link my GPS unit with Maemo Mapper while in Offline Mode seems to fail (but works in Normal mode), so I believe that being in Offline Mode should do the trick.

I don't believe however that this will help your attempts to increase battery life; I don't think the Nokia 770 keeps the Bluetooth radio on by default - only when you ask it to.
