I was scanning through bugzilla and came across the same bug as you did #7239 . apparently it sorts out the name resolution for local entires without needing you to add the .local in the hostname.
@depu - if i alter the /etc/resolv.conf and put my dns gateway everything works including external internet and intranet. Will give dnsmasq change a go after breakfast ;-)

@9000 - yes prefs.js does reflect the change (i rebooted the device).
