At least i can put a comment on bug #7239. I don't want to criticise Maemo/Nokia/etc for this because they're doing a great job. I still believe the N900 rocks over any similar device !

@9000 - nslookup localhost returns 127.0.0.1. We probably need to take a look at the dnsmasq logs

Yes looks like its a deliberate setup made.
From the comments in a defult dnsmaq.conf file
The following two options make you a better netizen, since they
# tell dnsmasq to filter out queries which the public DNS cannot
# answer, and which load the servers (especially the root servers)
# uneccessarily. If you have a dial-on-demand link they also stop
# these requests from bringing up the link uneccessarily.
# Never forward plain names (without a dot or domain part)
domain-needed
# Never forward addresses in the non-routed address spaces.
bogus-priv
So the change might cause a drop in the battery levels in case there are frequent dns requests on your network.
