It's not so much that Americans hate Nokia, it's just Nokia phones are hard to find on those sad little subsidized slave bondage packs we like to call 2-Year Contracts, in the US.
And off contract, nearly all phones cost a lot more than they usually do.
But... in the long run, they cost much less if you can find a good plan yourself...
So, I think it mostly stems from ignorance.
Also, some people get nasty furious when you tell them that Maemo is actually pronounced my-mo, not may-mo, and that Nokia is not no-kia, but knock-ia.
(Let the constructive criticism begin!)
