Well to be honest it sounds like your firmware is either corrupted or there are some underlying version conflicts... not simple to diagnose over the web. I would advise you flash manually, it is just as effective as automatic updating and retains messages, contacts etc.

And a manual reflash would be a quick, easy solution to your problem!
