They are two different technologies that solve the problem in different ways - One is not necessarily better than the other.

I like resistive-type touch screens because it allows you to use a stylus thus giving you more accuracy - ideal for paint-type packages, photo-retouching.

Capacitive-type touch screens are more receptive and the added benefit of using a solid cover - e.g. glass.

If the n900 was a capacitive-type screen there is the possibility of shattering the screen and still scratching it.
