Not quite. They were taken by surprise that the N900, originally only targeted at developers, geeks, and early adopters became so successful (selling 100 000 units in just 5 weeks is a lot).
Now they will have to support it longer than they initially planned to.

OK, the delay of 1.2 was a mess, but all in all, Nokia managed to fix more bugs and release more firmware versions than Google managed to release during the 6 months I had a G1. After all, PR 1.2 is the 4th firmware upgrade already.

Different needs require different solutions. The N900 is no one-size-fits-all phone. No phone is that.
