Yes, it will work, as (AFAIK) the partitions are mounted at block level over USB, just like a flash drive. I don't know what one would use for Windows, if that's what you use, but I'd assume that any standard tool would work in this case. On Linux, the only one I've used is MagicRescue, which is command-line only. I have no idea of its relative merits or possible flaws, as recovery isn't my thing. If you need something fancy, there is the Helix LiveCD for data forensics, which was free and now isn't, in some fashion (I'm not sure of the story). At any rate, it probably includes some free tools you could find elsewhere. Short of that, I'm not sure - this isn't my area of experise.
