i have followed this to install and overclock and is working fine

and have even set to starving and is working fine atm although havent done much testing as of yet

my questions are
-to save battery is it better to run min at 125mhz or 250mhz than 500mhz and how much battery is saved? is it worth it..?

Why don't u try it out?? Use battery monitoring apps like Battery graph or batteryeye and see how the performance and battery life changes. Everyone uses their phone differently so it's best to do a test for yourself, it's not hard or anything, just let your phone run for a whole day doing what you normally do, and switch to a different overclock/underclock and try it out.

-is it noticeably slower running min at 125mhz than 500mhz?

-what is the best way to charge the battery for it to last longer eg. run it to dead then charge or 1-5% charge or just whenever?

From what i've read for the Nokia N900 battery saving tips, it's best to charge it whenever you can. Not too much though, but just charge it when it's depleted to a low percentage. It's not good to let it die down to 0% and charge, that's only good certain types of battery, and Nokia N900's battery isn't this type.

-i have seen alot of ppl showing there own voltage profiles and skipping certain frequencies how do i set/change that?

Did u really search??? Ur asking a lot of questions that were answered in most of the common topics....

-what programs are good for testing stability and for how long?

From what i know, there isn't any. You have to test it by urself, just like i answered for ur first question. Stability isn't much of an issue though, just stick to the advices that other people gave and u'll be fine. It's better to follow the results posted by others than to try to overclock or underclock to an extreme value. To be honest, u won't get much difference in overclocking or underclocking, at least that's the conclusion I got from my experiment and testing.

-recommended apps, programs for oc?
Again, i'm sure u didn't search on this. It's very easy. I only just did it 4 or 5 days ago.

-recommended apps, programs for powersaving?

-and unrelated to oc and powersaving what are some good general apps out there?

- i read something about a possible 9 desktops??
---- and wiil having more desktops active use more power?

It's called Desktop Activity, download it from the APP Manager.

hopefully some1 can give me some guidance or point me in a direction i havent found yet, im sure when u understand its easy to find just having trouble at the moment

also call me stupid but b4 u do where do i find settings for how to use programs... ... eg http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/catorise/ its only that he posted in there how to move the items yet most dont have that..

There isn't a setting for Cateroize, at least i don't think there is. It just automatically sorts anything you download and installed by itself. The only thing you can do however is reorganize the apps the way you want, i.e manually. But there isn't any major settings to it.

I suggest you search on battery saving tips as well as overclocking, you'll find everything u need there.

EDIT:

In fact i'll help u out even more, read these 2 posts, that's all you need on overclocking.

and just to add in a bit more info on what I said earlier, when i said that overclocking and underclocking don't make too much differences on the battery life, it's because it's related to the power saving kernels that you use. I read it a while ago but I forgot, but anyway the battery life should be around the same as if you were running stock, or probably better. You'll find the explanations in jakiman's topic on overclocking.

Anyway i'm now constantly running 850MHZ overclocked and 500MHZ minimum (base), and from what i've tested so far it's pretty much the same battery drain. So ya, what i said is based on my testing and experiment, so it shouldn't make too much difference. What matters is how you use your phone, try not to listen to music and use wifi or bluetooth too much etc, because those are the primary concerns of battery drain. Just trying to find tips and advice on underclocking etc to save battery life isn't that much of a help. Powerful phones tend to drain battery more quickly, and this isn't really a phone but rather a mini computer......so ya.
