The capabilitys is actually there (sort of). Go to Contacts, tap All Contacts and select Get Contacts.Then select Import Mail Exch. contacts and enter name or part of name in "Search Mail Exch. contacts". When you have found the contact you need, select that contact, import it into the device and search it from Contacts in the device.

The user interface is horrible (probably very little attention has been paid to user interface and usability in developing N900), but you can use the feature when no other way is available.

If you need better Exchange support, I would go for a Symbian device or a device from another manufacturer.
