I think I found most of the info either here (tmo) or in the desktop spec I linked to for the categories.

Like I mentioned only some of the developers are adding the category info into the .desktop files. I wish more would. So it can be confusing when you install 3 apps that show up and you manually assign a category, and a fourth doesn't show up (or where you expect it to), andy you have to go find it.

For instance Qole does with his Easy Debian, so when installed, the apps show up in the proper categories. However, I prefer to have them all in a "Debian" folder, so the excludes were needed. I *think* that without the excludes the apps would show up in multiple folders (might not be a bad thing)

One additional item you can use as well (I don't think I saw it in your post):

You can use custom icons for your categories by placing them (*.png) in
/home/user/.local/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon
