So that brings up the question, is it much better to use QT Creator or the Maemo SDK.. The Maemo SDK from what I have tested, seems to be much easier if you're just doing a port from a Debian package, whereas the future would seem to lie in using the QT SDK.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Not actually sure what you mean by the maemo SDK - am assuming you mean GTK. If so then yes Qt seems to be the path that Nokia is moving to. Meego will be a Qt based platform.
