Multi-tasking in the iPhone world is a very, very controlled event and you have to pass muster with Apple before they'll let your program do it. Nowhere near the degree you get with the N900.

That said, the user should always have the option of deciding which, and how, programs run in the background. I'd like an adaptation of the Grand Central system on MeeGo, with some options for fine-grained user control.
