I personally have tried using the Mail for Exchange app in the Settings menu. I didn't dare do a contacts sync for fear of losing my contacts. But i made a fresh calender on gmail and synced the n900 calendar OK.

Don't think it works with smart entries like birthday's linked to the contacts database on the n900. But otherwise it's a suitable calendar link.

For the sake of sanity probably best to let the default email app handle email with imap.
