I agree it's not the best choice. But if it held fine in tests, why not use it (assuming it's cheaper or ... easy ... cheaper or simpl... Hm. Notice how everything translated to cheaper?)
Not everyone has bullet proof gas tanks, and only a few are involved in explosions. Cost justifies thinner tanks. Now if a tank is poorly made and explodes, I don't think it's fair to consider thin tanks a design flaw. Even if 2-ton tanks would have held.
No matter. For the example of this thread, any design flaw will do. Wrong positioning of headphones, wrong positioning of charger, blue cover that reflects flash, single and flimsy kickstand, poorly affixed under-keyboard bar, you pick.
