Isn't there a D-pad on the n8x0? How about one of those but with proportional sensitivity, i.e. reacting more or less depending on how much you push is any direction (I think there was a console with a d-pad like that). If you add a fast keyboard (the n900 is a bit too stiff for good gaming speed), you can use the keyboard for gaming buttons.
