So I decided to experiment with another setting that has been commented out in the config file:

removing the # in front of 'element=ipp' seems to enable some form of noise reduction post-processing, as can be seen in these two screenshots taken from
NeatImage
:

Note that this is
without
any noise-reduction applied by NeatImage -- the screenshots simply show the plugin's analysis of the image file's noise patterns prior to creating a noise-reduction profile.
The difference is most noticeable in the chroma noise seen in the two bottom panels (Cr and Cb), but you can also see some smoothing in the Y channel.
I'm not a fan of the results, but some folks might prefer having the camera do a bit of NR on their photos.. especially if they don't have something like NeatImage to do their own NR with.
