Not sure about your question but I *think* you mean your virtual keyboard doesn't show up? Correct me if I'm wrong
I've just tried, once you've opened the 'new SMS' screen you double-tap the text input field and the virtual keyboard will pop up.
This only works when the hardware keyboard is closed though, if it's opened the virtual one won't show up.
