if the amount of pictures changes "randomly", I am truly amazed: the app measures how many pictures are needed and takes only photos needed. There is no use taking 9 photos with 1/3 EV if you can take 2 photos +- 1 1/2 EV that provide same amount of data.

EV doesn't count, look at sensitivity, aperture and exposure.
