I don't think the author understands why "independent geeks" don't like iPads. It's because they're locked down, they're bland appliances that are not to be tinkered with that seem to be owned more by the manufacturer than the end user, which is about the opposite of what we want in our devices. It's the same reason a car enthusiast would prefer a Lotus Exige to an R35 Nissan GTR.
I had an iPhone and over time became quite critical of it.

Still, the above quote is quite self-evident to me; it is about the same as stating that 95% of the most vocal critics of the Democratic party aren't Democrats. While a true enough statement, writing an article on the matter isn't exactly pushing journalistic excellence forward.

People join groups they agree with, and they buy products that they want to spend their money on.
