I don't know if I understand your question right... but...

There are two ways that I know of to use the phone in portrait mode:

* in most applications open up the keyboard and hit ctrl shift r
* install rotatedaemon

Do note that many programs assume the phone will always be in landscape mode, results will sometimes be a tad different to what you might expect.
