As for the updates, yes there were bug fixes in the updates for N900. There were new features too (skype video calls for example). Lots of small features, just like the small feature changes and fixes from 2.0 to 2.1 in Android.
Or like the oft-promised Flash 10.x for N900? Ooooo...ffffffffffffuhhhhh

(By the by, I get USB tether just fine on my Droid and never had to root it)
