johnel, you seem to know a lot about this stuff. Could you shed some light on this? I don't care whether the version is "supported" by the community or Nokia but will it be a fully functional version? Will it improve the N900 or will it be like NITDroid?

gill_za, totally agree with you there.
It's a long story but basically:

Nokia will not officially support MeeGo on n900.
Community is doing port and some Nokia employees are lending a hand too.
Drivers for n900 are still closed but community are writing open source versions (e.g. battery management)
MeeGo for n900 is till very immature. The next release is due in October and will have a gui (maybe very basic version but feature complete?)
The n900 version of MeeGo should be backward compatible with maemo5 - I'm not sure on the full details on this. This version is based on Harmattan (codename for maemo6).
Proper MeeGo for new Nokia device at end of this year maybe next year.

All this has not been formally announced by Nokia but through rumours by informed people (not me) here in the forum.
Edit: Except "Nokia will not officially support MeeGo on n900."
