Maemo is a linux distro, since it uses busybox some of the shell commands won't necessarily be the same but the standard GNU versions are available in the repos, and other shells etc. That might not mean anything to you yet.

You can also use Qole's easy chroot to run debian or ubuntu on your N900 to get a more standard set of software running on your device.
