I'm astounded at the comments of some (not silvermountain's-- I've come to expect his baseless, pointless bashing).

You folks can slam us all you like for failures. It's just rather inane at this point.

The current five ran knowing well we were entering into a likely lame duck situation. None of us were naive. We saw the Maemo sunset like anyone else. We just wanted to do our damndest, to at least TRY-- rather than simply squatting at a keyboard typing out epithets, gripes and invalid assessments of anyone's efforts.

You can slam us for failure. Go ahead. But the evidence of council action are right here, right under the Community banner. Right in the emails and blogs and websites devoted to this community.

Absence of success is not absence of effort. It just indicates that we've been pushing rope. But that's not by design-- it's a consequence. Of corporate inertia.

I expect people to understand the difference. Asking too much?

It's easy to slam the volunteers at this point. We answer. Nokia doesn't.

So sure, lash out, Rant away. Whatever makes you feel better, silvermountain and company.

Lame Duck???

That is not why I ran. In fact you and others echoed qgil's statement that this would be the most important term (I usually provide links and will if you turn this into a pissing contest but right now I am reacting to this unbelievable statement:
knowing well we were entering into a likely lame duck situation. None of us were naive.
)

Does this also mean that you well knew that inviting others to participate would also likely be a waste of their time?

If so... that sucks on so many levels dude.

However, before the PM rants start piling up these are my feelings about that "Lame Duck" statement and not about the need for the council or the the topic of this poll.

@ silvermountain:

Everyone would miss the council if they were gone. Everyone.

This is one of those times when I wish this was a two part, compound poll.

That is, first ask:
"Is this forum your primary means of interaction with maemo.org?"

Then separate the results.

I believe you will have very different results within the two groups.

Those who use this forum as their primary point of contact with maemo.org may not have a clue as to how past council decisions and actions have affected the amount, quality, and means to produce the many applications we all enjoy in the repositories.

Past council actions have resulted in things you don't see within this forum.

-You don't see advertisements.

-You don't see threads complaining about fraud or member run scams.

-You don't see threads reporting virus, Trojans, or malware in the repositories.

-You don't see public admonishments for bad forum behavior, including SPAM. (Although we often see examples of some piss poor behaviors, offensive members soon go away or magically see the errors of their ways.)

-You don't see heavy handed censorship.

-You don't see Nokia or public search engine policies influencing the day to day operation and management of this organization and forum.

What you also do not see is the amount of time council members spend editing WiKi's, participating in community mailing lists and in IRC, reporting and managing forum and website bugs, past Sprints, as well as any individual help or advice delivered via private message.

Now back to my feelings as I have had some time to process more of the post I responded to:

In the unlikely event that I won a seat on our council for what I was lead to believe was "The most important maemo.org council term to date" I stepped down from some of my duties on another, much larger forum, reduced my personal work load, joined all the community mailing lists, and studied the hell out of past council meeting minutes. I did this in order to not waste anyone else's time and to best answer the many questions that you and other council members asked of me. I didn't receive the memo about this "Lame Duck" thing.

Boy was I dumb, eh?
It just shows how far out of touch I am and it is a good thing for all a person like me wasn't elected to council.

For the first time since I joined this organization, I truly do feel "naive".
