The one u say "unusual' is actually ssid of an peer to peer network,, basically someone must have used their laptop as a wireless router.
Its an adhoc network
the one "normal" is access point / infrastructure / router/gateway

Have you not upgraded to PR1.2? I think PR1.2 does not support connecting to adhoc networks
