I have long fingernails. In my experience, using nail only results in no response whatsoever from a capacative screen. When using a friend's iphone (I know, I need to change my friends) I am forced to completely change my screen technique to get any reaction out of it. And yes, I have nails long enough to test nail only with no finger contact.
