Here's a previous post, where I posted a small shell script that prints out the remaining time in HH:MM. I suppose it could be quite easily used with something like Queen Beecon or Desktop Command Execution widget, to bring it on the desktop.

Gotcha: read the whole thread for why it (or at least this particular approach) will never be very accurate with the N900.
