OK, I'll take a different line on this - here's what I DO like about Apple (in relation to N900 and mobile phones/devices in general):
Apple have raised awareness and perception of smartphones in general; that has to be good for everyone.
Apple have produced a nice, safe ecosystem around iPhone; Open Source has it's attractions to some, but it will not appeal to The Many until it can match the 'Walled Garden' for security, comfort and ease-of-use.
Apple have raised the standard for app development, choice and quality. App Store may be full of all kinds of fart and twitter apps, but at least they are of quality and largely bug-free.
Apple have forced other Manufacturers to dig deep and introduce new, innovative models to 'keep up' with Apple, who are
perceived
to be the market leaders.
Apple and iPhone are now commonplace. That will drive buyers to seek out more distinctive alternatives and drive the market accordingly.
Apple have shown themselves to be fallable (recent antenna issue) which will lead buyers to less critical of other mfrs.
Steve Jobs is old! Younger buyers will associate him with iPhone and seek out more youthful alternatives and drive diversity in the market.
So I don't hate Apple. I might even try owning one some day. But for now, nothing comes close to the experience of N900 for me. Maemo may have its flaws and may soon be discontinued, but it is still a fine OS and will remain so.
N900 is a fine device and can do the things I need far better than iPhone4. I'm just grateful that Apple's presence and power in the market will make N900's successor an even better device.
