I always thought that bringing up the camera app with the camera button was one of the best features of Nokia cell phone GUIs.
If that is the case then it should be possible to reroute that command so if the cam button is pressed a custom script would run that checked lens status and let the N900 do something useful in case the lens is closed (and otherwise simply call the original cam app).

So anyone know where to change the app that is called when cam button is pressed? Or how to determine whether the lens is open or not?

The cam app already opens automatically when triggering the lens, so assigning the cam button to start the same app is redundant and since hardware buttons are sparse on the N900 it could be put to better use.
