I think he meant because the blue people would be so tiny on the screen. But if we're criticizing Avatar, comparing it to, say, pocahontas, would be far more clever then just comparing it to smurfs. And even then there's enough difference that better insults would be appropriate. That said, I personally enjoyed the movie. I don't think it was a great work of art or whatever, but it was enjoyable enough to get into.
