As already said, you can simply use the Symbol keyboard: call it by pressing the blue arrow and then Ctrl (Sym).
If your Sym keyboard hasn't the | symbol, then you can manually edit it and add all the symbols you want, just install Modify Your On-Screen Keyboard Layouts (
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/scv-reader/
).
BTW version v0.0.2-2 of that app has an annoying bug, so you should use the perfectly functional version in Extras-Testing:
