It might have to do with the fact that on the N900, the DLNA client is exclusively functional through the Media Player application. The Media player only plays audio/video.

Other N900 applications such as the Picture Viewer and the File Manager (both could open JPEG images for you) do not have native access to the DLNA client that can retrieve media from your laptop.
