put the file into your:

/usr/lib/hildon-desktop/example.py
/usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/example.desktop

Xterminal:
root
killall hildon-status-menu

This help me understanding what going on. Otherwise it's hard to debug. Unless i'm holding the device.
