Alas, ash is quite a bit dumber than bash. You have to edit /etc/profile, but be careful, any mistakes will impact all shells (even the shell you want to use to fix the mistake).

I have repackaged bash from http://packages.debian.org/sid/bash/armel/download

I haven't figured out how to get it into a repository yet. So for now you can download it from my website:

I hear that it isn't a good thing to change the 'user' login to bash. Search the forum for that note. So I just type bash at the ash prompt, and I have a nice scriptable, aliasable shell.
