On the N8x0 mplayer is used for thumbnailing, and yes, this timeout could be changed (8 seconds at the moment).
As I got my n810 stolen, now I'm talking only about n900 ((( I can get thumbnails for almost all videos, but it takes big number of opening folder and generating thumbs (

After some runs I've got a feeling that:
1. New version uses more CPU
2. When loading new media in player is uses a lot more CPU and it takes more time
3. D-Bus is quite overloaded with the same messages. I've attached output of dbus-monitor --session when changing song.
