I'm not sure I see the panic.
A stop in support will not mean that the operating system stops working.
You will still be able to use your N900 for all of the things you bought it for.
Some development will continue in the community, although yes, the development of apps will slow down eventually.

Right now though I'm not really sure how many people are worried about any of the above . They are either deep into the technology and writing code or they have everything the like on their device and enjoy using it and tweaking it every so often. As said many people will use this device for ages until the hardware fails and then give it up. Your aspirations may differ but that is another matter.
