I have been following this discussion in the mailing list, and to put it bluntly, of all the things that have concerned me about the MeeGo project in the short time it has existed publicly, this issue is by far the most troubling. Choosing self-contained application bundles because they'll most easily slot into the myriad of soon-to-be MeeGo app stores is penny wise and pound foolish by a number of measures. More importantly though, brushing aside calls for a MeeGo Extras repository that can contain certified apps with the contention that the workability of such a system must first be proven is an insult to all those who have contributed to the design and implementation of maemo.org Extras as well as those who built the thousands of high quality packages that are distributed through it.
