So far you've received some very constructive recommendations above. However I'd like to go back to the very basic question, that why do you need to convert at all?

With few exceptions, you can play almost any format on N900, provided that you installed extra decoder support and SiB+mplayer. If the format doesn't support in default mediaplayer, it'd support in mplayer.

When playing with SiB+mplayer (remember to set to to use mplayer instead of default under SiB), you can press f to enable frame skipping (press one more f to increase the frame skipping, and f the third time return to normal), such that the sound and video sync'd.

I needed to convert like hell for playing movies on Android, but I've never ever needed to convert any movies since I use N900. N900 should save you lots of time in conversion, thus I asked. Hope this help.
