Just to double-check - you need to slide the SIM holder to unclip it and open it up. The SIM then needs to be put into the SIM holder (it should be held in place by the metal framework), and the holder folded flat again and slid back to the locked position.
If you've done all that and the SIM is not recognised, then it sounds like a faulty device - take it back and get it replaced.
