This parameter is passed directly to Google, so if it doesn't work in Google Local, it won't work for the web service. Does it work in Google Local?

That should be available in v2.x, yes. (I'm targeting 2.0, but it may not be immediately present in 2.0 - i.e. possibly 2.1 instead.)
