Li-Ion is somewhat better in that regard, if you abuse them they tend to protest by doing something the industry calls "venting with flame". Normal people would say "explode". Thus, chargers and devices actually need to have a 0.1 cent part instead of a 0.01 cent part to manage the charging...
it's funny about the exploding lipo battery, i have never seen my battery's do that, some have puffed op like balloons, but thats when they have be discharged to much, and i have overcharged battery's a couple of times without any drama.
And i have some 70+ cells laying around, of all kinds.

The battery's are all so getting better and better.
