You can do quite a lot without any USB cord, as long as you have Wifi. Most of the time, I am using SSH to move files between my computer and the phone wirelessly. And of course, installing apps is easy and can be done over wifi or 3g as well.

You can find screen protectors for the N900 online, but personally, I simply bought an iPhone screen protector (which is slightly bigger) and cut it down to the right size.
