I don't think I've turned on data connetion when using that app, though connecting to internet would help it collects more instant information on the road.

But it might be using A-GPS anyway, as in theory A-GPS doesn't require data connection, it is calculating the proximity position between mobile signal transmitting spots to predict your current location in between them (afaik)
