ok. i've gotten around this problem... which in the end didn't appear to be an actual problem.

i simply assumed that the setup was correct. so what i did was wiped both accounts, set them up via the 'gmail' wizard... and left them for about a day.

they didn't work at first, as described above... but eventually things kicked in and they're working as expected now.
